F. ODOEVSKY AND E. T. A. HOFFMAN: CONVERGENCE AND ESTRANGEMENT 2025-06-30T12:54:58+03:00 Elizaveta M. Perevalova perewalowa.elizaveta@yandex.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-90-100

The article examines the similarities and differences in the artistic embodiment of the motif of fear in V.F. Odoevsky and E.T.A. Hoffman. The material of the study is the short stories by V.F. Odoevsky from the novel “Russian Nights” (“The Ball”, “The Last Suicide”, “The Mockery of the Corpse”) and the novellas by E.T.A. Hoffman (“The Sandman” and “The Deserted House”). Traditionally, the “dreadful” element in artistic texts is examined through such formalcontent categories as imagery and motifs. However, this time attention should be paid to the subjective, communicative nature of fear and it`s connection with the structural features of the artistic world. In connection with that the analysis of the chronotope, the system of points of view and the narrative instances was carried out. The investigation allows us to establish that in both writers fear is caused by the collision of material and ideal. The differences are manifested in the concept of this conflict and its capture by artistic means. Thus, Odoevsky abandons the category of the irrational and opposes spaces of different axiological significance, retains the highest spiritual authority and uses a narrative strategy of “exposure”, presenting a sharp conflict objectively existing. The fear in Hoffmann's texts is associated with the instability of the boundary between rational and irrational at the level of the microcosm and macrocosm, the absence of a higher spiritual authority, as well as a special narrative strategy of “hiding” objective information about the world.

Key words: dual conception of reality, fear, chronotope, point of view, artistic philosophy, F. Tolstoy. The rebellion of the dreamerheroes against imperfect reality is associated in the novel with the problem of self-identification. The journey to Mars of the thinker Elk and the figure of Gusev becomes not so much a search for a wonderful place as a wandering in search of their own place in a rapidly changing reality. The intellectual Elk, embodying the idea of scientific service, and Gusev, a native of the people, a quixotic revolutionary, an owner of active creative energy, are necessary for each other on the path of self-determination. It is important not only to advance the heroes along the path of self-realization, but also to move towards each other. The relationships I - other has been established between the “scientist” Elk and the “non-scientist” Gusev, where recognition and understanding of the value system of the other leads to recognition of oneself. The journey-search for heroes ends with the acquisition of personal happiness and the realization of one's destiny, which contributes to the achievement of the common good in the future.

Key words: Russian Don-Quixotism, myth of Don Quixote, A. FIEDLER'S “THE FIRST LITERARY STEPS: AUTOBIOGRAPHIES OF MODERN RUSSIAN WRITERS”) 2025-06-30T13:22:31+03:00 Elena A. Selyutina L22502@yandex.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-113-123

The article provides the analysis of the narratives of professional writers in the collection of questionnaires by F. Fiedler's “The First Literary Steps: Autobiographies of Modern Russian Writers” (1911) from the point of view of universal ways of conceptualizing the writer's fate. Questionnaires (questionnaires) are a new genre for the modern era, used in publications of different status, where subjectivity was primarily appreciated. The author concludes that despite the difference in the position of writers in the artistic processes of the modern era, narratives of self-reflection tend to unify, placing the ontology “fate” and its possible roles in human life in the main position. The question frame of the questionnaire F. Fiedler focuses on a number of conventions adopted in society in relation to contemporary writers, as well as on social attitudes formed in previous eras, which consider it to be important to appeal to the direct speech of writers. The research of the autodocumentary texts of the modern era on the example of the genre of the questionnaire-autobiography of a writer turns out to be important for determining the universal models of egoization peculiar to writers of this time. The public self-reflection of the authors depends not only on the narrative framework proposed by F. Fiedler, but also tends to fictionalize in world construction and world representation, focusing on the scheme of an adventurous novel. Therefore, writers see the “fatality” of their life choices, describe their path to writing as trials, unexpected plot twists and the nonaccidental intervention of fate.

Key words: questionnaire of the writer, Russian modernism, ego narrative, media discourse, speech genres, Fedor Fiedler, literary autobiography, autobiographical practices, ontologeme “fate”, adventurous novel
2025-06-30T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Elena A. Ivanova nplechova@yandex.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-124-133

The article is devoted to the question of imitation or continuation of the motive of self-sacrifices in belletristic prose of now forgotten writers of the 1830s and 1850s: M. S. Zhukova and I. Voskresensky. Zhukova’s work is considered as women’s prose, along with the works of E. Gan, E. Tur, Yu. Zhadovskaya, K. Pavlova, and others. Voskresensky was known to the public as the author of entertaining melodramatic novels. Contemporaries of the great classics (A. S. Pushkin, N. V. Gogol, A. S. Griboyedov), Zhukovа and Voskresensky largely drew inspiration from them, refracting their images in their own way in their works. The analysis of the novels of the same names, written by these authors, demonstrate continuity of the author's creation: both writers recognize women's right to independence from a man. The motive of self-sacrifices confirms ability of women-characters to have high moral feelings and acts to save the honor of a loved one. Appeal of the writers to motive of self-sacrifices is due to attention to the fate of women. Comparison of texts reveals the similarity of the authors' views on the possibility of independent woman's life from a man in the mid-19th century. It has proved that the authors' work demonstrates continuity.

Key words: motive, prose, self-sacrifice, belletristic, hero, story, novel
2025-06-30T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Natalia P. Statsenko varsta2001@mail.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-134-147

The study of literary contacts of writers is the key to reading the cultural code of an epoch and a specific historical period. In the interaction of the two worldviews of the authors, new meanings are born and ideas that are already circulating in society are deepened. In this context, the nature of the dialogical relations between the writers of the 1870s and 1880s A.P. Chekhov and N.P. Wagner is considered. They were writers of the same cultural and historical epoch. The first came to literature in the early 1870s, being a famous zoologist and professor at St. Petersburg University, the second began to engage in literary work while studying at the medical faculty at the end of that decade to help a family that had moved to Moscow from Taganrog. The writers are completely different in terms of their talents and the nature of their literary activities, but they nevertheless reflected the common features of their era, willingly or unwittingly entering into a literary dialogue with each other. The cultural-historical and comparative-typological approach to their works allows us to determine the degree of influence on each other's work and identify a range of common themes: wealth and poverty, material and spiritual poverty, faith and science, difficult childhood, spiritualism. Close and individual positions in the worldview and literary style of the writers are revealed.

Key words: N. P. Wagner, A. P. The relevance of the problem is due to a number of reasons, among which there is the diminution of teaching methods focused on the peculiarities of the national language and the character and mind of the student, the exaggeration of the importance of the so-called “know-how” borrowed from the methods of RFL and methods of teaching a foreign language. The aim of the study is to prove the productivity of the method of teaching language observation. F.I. Buslaev is a founder of the method, further it was picked up by his successors-scientists of the 19th-20th centuries, among them there is A.M. Peshkovsky, F.F. Fortunatov, D.N. Ovsyaniko-Kulikovsky, F.F. Fortunatov, M.V. Panov, A.V. Dudnikov and others. The method of the language observation is analyzed in the context of ideas about national priorities in teaching the native language; the history of the issue is given, the relevance and productivity of the observation method is proved; a description of observation as a psychological phenomenon is presented; the educational, developing potential of the named method is considered; examples of the implementation of the teaching method in practice are given. Kutyeva marku2006@yandex.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-36-48

The purpose of the study is to identify the variety of semantic realizations and the gradual complication of the butterfly image in the poetry of the most representative Portuguese writers of the 17th-20th centuries. Among them are Almeida Garrett, Cesario Verde, Florbela Espanca, Fernando Pessoa and other original representatives of Baroque, Romanticism, Symbolism and Modernism. In Portuguese poetry of the 17th-18th centuries (Jerónimo Bahia, Manuel du Bocage) the image of a butterfly appears as the emblem of a young man in love and acts as part of a bucolic landscape – the background for pastoral subjects. Later, the butterfly acts as an allegory of lightness and freedom, feelings of nostalgia and longing (saudade); in addition, it is uniquely associated with the soul: not peaceful, but anxious, confused, crazy and longing. The modernist F. Pessoa interprets the butterfly as a manifestation of two worlds – the real and the inner, intimate. In the twentieth century, psychological motives become a priority, however, traditional meanings remain, undergoing reinterpretation. As a result of the research, the linguopoetic specificity of the butterfly image is determined, which is realized in a variety of symbolic meanings and associative connections. The authors conclude that its semantic development is conditioned by two opposing trends: continuity and innovation.

Key words: Portuguese poetry, linguistic and poetic semantics, context, borboleta / butterfly, metaphor, symbolism, image
2025-06-30T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Varvara A. Razumnykh amilano80@mail.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-49-60

The paper focuses on the specific features of the indefinite-personal syntactic structures with ‘man’-pronoun in Old English. The epic poem ‘Beowulf’ and Anglo-Saxon Chronicles provide valuable research material, as they help reconstruct the language potential of the selected structures in various literary genres. The continuous sampling and contextual analysis methods revealed considerable differences in frequency, meaning, and style of ‘man’-structures between the texts. The development of indefinite-personal structures in Old English is assumed to be underpinned by the semantic and grammatical transformation of the noun ‘man’ and fostered by the human-centered, or anthropocentric, view of the world as perceived by the Anglo-Saxons.

Key words: Old English, indefinite-personal structures, semantic transformation, grammaticalization, anthropocentric worldview
2025-06-30T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Elena V. Gubanov gubanov5@rambler.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-61-68

The relevance of the research is determined by the active development of cognitive lingvopoetics. The paper clarifies the meaning of the term “epithetation”, draws attention to its cognitive nature, conditioned by the blending of mental spaces of the components of the epithet complex. The analysis of the epithetation of the key concepts of M. Tsvetaeva's texts - light and darkness - is carried out. As a result of the conducted research, it was found that M. Tsvetaeva's texts are distinguished by linguistic reflection, which is reflected in a stable tendency to cognitive redistribution of attributes between the concept and the object associated with it. Epithetation often has substantive verbalization. It shows that the logic of epithetation in the poet's texts is conditioned by the situational choice of the attributive-predicative feature, which has significant discrepancies with the usual word usage (light and darkness complement each other, changing evaluative meanings). The use of the cognitive-semantic method in the analysis of epithetation allows us to evaluate the mechanisms of metaphor formation from new positions.

Key words: epithetation, Marina Tsvetaeva, concept “light”, concept “darkness”, individual style, epithet complex
2025-06-30T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Sergey A. VELTMAN 2025-06-30T12:41:45+03:00 Tikhon V. Pavlov pavlt98@mail.ru
https://doi.org/10.18522/1995-0640-2025-2-69-79

The article is devoted to the study of the structure and content of the lexcal-thematic group “Social and political system” in the novel. The units of this group, words, terminological phrases are considered as a part of subgroups united by narrower subjects (names of titles of power, names of ranks, names of estates, names of units of political-territorial division, etc.). The article provides the analysis of the semantics of the linguistic units used by A. Veltman, taking into account the context and the author’s notes to the novel. By using data from Russian historical and explanatory dictionaries, it is possible to show that the majority of units in the considered lexical-thematic group were taken by the writer from ancient Russian texts, however, some words are used in a peculiar way, because their meanings in the novel do not coincide with those meanings, recorded in the dictionaries.

Key words: Veltman, “Koshchei the Immortal”, stylization of the Old Russian language, lexical-thematic group, Russian language of the 19th century, language of the historical novel
2025-06-30T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Tikhon V. In our opinion, translation adaptation is important when translating the main advertising text, since it contains the main description of the product or service to which manufacturers and advertisers are trying to attract the attention of potential buyers. It is important to note that adequate translation adaptation of the advertising text has a direct impact on the demand and popularity of the advertised product (service) among consumers.

Key words: advertising, main advertising text, translation, translation adaptation of the text
2025-06-30T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Lyudmila M.
