From Compound Adjectives to the Author’s Intention (on the Material of Trilogy «A Legend In The Making» by Feodor Sologub)

The article analyzes the adjective сomposites in the trilogy of F. Sologub «A Legend in the Making». Revealed composites (a total of 307 occurrences) are divided into three groups: color composites, composites, denoting state, property or evaluation and mixed composites, expressing at the same time the color and condition, property, or evaluation. Color composites, in turn, are divided into adjectives, which denote complex colors in the literal meaning, adjectives, which denote complex colors in a figurative sense, and designations of the intensity of the color. Examples from this groups are considered in details, their synesthetically is noted as a manifestation of the plan of modus, as a mix of meanings, lexical «alchemy», expressing the idea of the synthesis that runs through the whole work. Special attention is paid to specifics of the graphic design composites. The choice of hyphenated or separate writing is considered as one of the ways of expressing the author’s intentions. In conclusion, the functions of compound adjectives in the embodiment of the author’s intention are revealed.
