Gender Aspect of ‟Newˮ Fatherhood in American Film Discourse
Abstract
Anastasia A. Linnik (Krasnodar, Russian Federation)
The article is devoted to the analysis of the gender aspect of the ‟newˮ fatherhood phenomenon in American film discourse on the example of Cameron Stuart from the film ‟Infinitely Polar Bearˮ. The gender perspective of the image of “new” father is analyzed in film discourse through the stereotypes of masculinity and paternity. The article emphasizes that the separation of social roles of men and women in society directly affects the way family and parental roles are distributed and ascribed within a family. The linguistic and extralinguistic contexts were also involved in the analysis of the gender aspect of “new” fatherhood, the latter being an integral part of the film and film discourse. The analysis of the verbal component includes the analysis of the semantics of film phrases or lines, which directly or indirectly stress the gender-specific side of the image of ‟newˮ father as the representation of ‟newˮ fatherhood in the film. The analysis of non-verbal signs takes into account the analysis of the manner of speech, the behavior of the character as a father in the situations of communication with other characters. The material allows to study the gender perspective of the ‟newˮ fatherhood phenomenon in film discourse, the degree of its correspondence with the popular stereotypes of masculinity and thus to reveal the basic differences between the ‟traditionalˮ and ‟newˮ paternal behavior, given that the latter one is characterized by the visible presence of feminine traits and that the ‟traditionalˮ fatherhood corresponds to “traditional” masculinity, which attributes to a man the qualities of a leader and represents him mostly as aggressive, decisive, authoritative, and so on.
Key words: culture, gender, gender stereotypes, gender roles, masculinity, fatherhood, film discourse.
