Substitution of Concepts: Images of Russia and the USSR in the American Consciousness on the Example of «The Time» Magazine (1946-1991)
Abstract
Elena A. Kotelenets, Margarita S. Zatulovskaya (Moscow, Russian Federation)
The author analyzes the frequency of mentioning «Russia», «U.S.S.R» and «Soviet Union» in the American press. The source is used in articles published in the weekly «The Time» in the period 1946-1991. In the course of the study, a thorough review of 2577 publications was made. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that such a thorough study of the publications of The Time magazine devoted to Russia is being carried out for the first time. The author puts forward a hypothesis about the connection of the frequency of mentioning these concepts with the process of crowding out the image of modern Russia with the image of the USSR in the USA. It is is also put forward a theory about the reasons for the active use of Cold War stereotypes in relation to the Russian Federation. The research methodology is based on a statistical analysis of the use of the keywords «Russia», «U.S.S.R» and «Soviet Union» in the articles of «The Time» magazine. It is proved that the frequency of using the word «Russia» in these journals is 10 times higher than the frequency of using the word «U.S.S.R». This allows the author to conclude that the authors of the articles did not distinguish between such concepts as Russia and the Soviet Union in the magazine «The Time». What further led to the substitution of concepts in modern times and contributed to ousting the image of Russia by the image of the USSR in the American consciousness.
Key words: imagology, cold war, image of Russia, USSR, stereotypes.
