Abstract

Galina N. Vorontsova (Moscow, Russian Federation)

The art space of «Quiet Flows the Don» is not limited by the Don region. The events in the novel unfold on the fronts of the First World War, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Rostov and Novocherkassk. Each of these local spaces is endowed with certain connotations that play an important role in revealing the purpose of the work. This article is dedicated to the Moscow space of «Quiet Flows the Don», mainly associated in the novel with three characters: Grigory Melekhov, Elizaveta Mokhova and student Timofey. In some way, Evgeny Listnitsky and Fedor Podtelkov fall into the orbit of Moscow. Each of them has a different relationship with the city, which is ultimately opposed to the Don. However, a characteristic feature common to these characters showed itself in the novel: all of them, having been in Moscow at one time or another in their biography, are forced to make an important life choice for themselves.

Key words: M.A. Sholokhov, «Quiet Flows the Don», Moscow, art space, autobiography, connotations.
