The study relevance is due to the continuing interest in the work of A. Chekhov, as well as the need to study and analyze Chekhov's texts not only from linguistic and literary positions, but also from the point of view of psychology. The article examines the image of Father Anastasiy, a churchman from the story “The Letterˮ. The study includes the analysis of the lexical means involved in creating an external and internal portrait of a priest, taking into account the psychological characteris-tics of the individual and with an appeal to the concept of an existential crisis. The results of the study show that a priest is a very complex psychological personality who is characterized by deviant behavior and strives to complete his life path. This is proved by the lexical means used by the writer to create a portrait (external, internal).
Key words: Chekhov, priest, lexical means, portrait, psychology, personality, existential crisis
