Abstract

Nikolsky Ye.

Keywords: historical prose, eighteenth century, Catherine the Great, interpretation of historical figures in the artistic prose, an apology of the monarchy.

The article shows the author’s vision of the identity of the empress Catherine the Great in the mystical novels by Vsevolod Solovyov. The author does not analyse darker sides of the queen’s activities, but focuses his attention on bright sides of her personality - wisdom, charm, great public deeds. The article should not be mistakenly viewed as an attempt of the monarchist writer to deliberately idealise his regal character. Solovyov wishes to show the best in a person, called by God to the royal service, thus becoming the Lord anointing. It is particularly this aspect of the great Empress that became dominant in the novels “Wise Men” and” The Great Rosecroix”.
