THE TRANSLATOR’S METATEXTS: CHARACTERISTICS OF PREFACES AND COMMENTS
Abstract
Ostapenko D. I.
Keywords: metatext, the translator’s metatext, preface, comment, classification of the translator’s comments.
The article deals with the problem of defining the notions of metatext and the translator’s metatext in particular. It focuses on such types of the translator’s metatexts as prefaces and comments and considers their characteristics as well as their structural and functional features. The translator’s prefaces and comments to the works of XVIII-XX century British writers and poets translated into Russian are given as examples. The author also suggests the classification of the translator’s comments according to their content. It includes historiographical and culturological comments, comments on geographical names, scientific, artistic and literary notions and some others.
