THE MAIN CHANGES IN UNSTRESSED VOCALISM IN THE PROCESS OF ASSIMILATION OF RUSSIAN BORROWINGS IN ENGLISH
Abstract
Smirnova M.S.
Keywords: Russian borrowings, reduction, degree of reduction, neutralization, assimilation.
The article presents the results of the research how Russian borrowings adapt to the phonetic system of the English language in the aspect of unstressed vocalism. The corpus of the analyzed words was chosen by an overall selection from 10 editions of D. Jones’ English Pronouncing dictionary (1928, 1937, 1947, 1948, 1957, 1963, 1977, 1997, 2003, 2006). The synchronical-diachronical analysis shows the basic tendencies in changes of the phonetic structure of the Russian borrowings in the system of the English language.
