THE CATEGORY OF TENSE - A HISTORICALLY BINARY OPPOSITION
Abstract
Polenova G.T.
Keywords: diachronic, the Yenisei languages, verbal binary opposition.
The article studies a diachronic development of the verb tense on the material of the Yenisei languages. The author starts from the opposition ‘present / past tense’, and follows the path of this opposition as the original in the system of the verb. It is concluded that the formal expression of the verbal binary opposition ‘present / past tense’ goes back to the opposition of state / action, active / inactive, durative / momentary, perfective / imperfective.
