THE FORTUNE OF A SPEECH GENRE, or WHAT SHAKESPEARE DID IN HAMLET?
Abstract
Shaitanov I.O.
Keywords: historical poetics, comparative literature, speech genre, Shakespeare, problem play, Hamlet, chronicle, revenge tragedy.
Though in 1623 the first edition of Shakespeare’s collection of plays was structured according to the genres, still he became well known in continental Europe as a playwright who did not follow any literal rules, including genre ones. Later a more adequate term for Shakespeare’s attitude to genre was coined - ‘problem plays’ which included some of his comedies and tragedies: from The Merchant of Venice to Hamlet. The great tragedy ‘Hamlet’ has been chosen in the article to demonstrate Shakespeare’s genre understanding in his experimental attitude to traditional forms. Hamlet is analysed as a ‘revenge tragedy’, the most fashionable genre on the Elizabethan stage. The progress of its verbal transformation is shown.
