Keywords: figurativeness in the English political discourse, cultural aspects of political metaphor, pragmatic effect of speech.

The metaphor is analyzed as one of the most important means of enhancing the pragmatic potential of the English political discourse. The author makes a special emphasis on the pre-determined nature of the choices and transformations of metaphoric means required for specific pragmatic and cognitive tasks in the political sphere. The article provides a number of interesting examples of modern political metaphors, often with their historical, political and cultural connotations.
