The concept of metadiscourse is an issue of debate among scholars across various disciplines despite its rich research story. The history of metadiscourse research within Russian language studies is highly important. The article traces the evolution of metadiscourse research through the analysis of 30 key studies in Russian linguistics published between 1992 and 2025. Nowadays researchers consider metadiscourse not as a structural device for organizing text but rather as a communicative tool to engage and attract the audience. The analysis highlights the shift in conceptualizations of metadiscourse in contemporary Russian linguistics. It also outlines the criteria for distinguishing between terms that capture the realization of ‘meta-’ elements in texts. Additionally, we explore the intersections between research on written and spoken metadiscourse within the Russian linguistic tradition. A systematic comparative analysis of metadiscourse features in written versus spoken discourse could clarify the role of metadiscourse and its markers within the framework of ‘meta-’ phenomena. This approach would also facilitate the application of metadiscourse research findings, which would provide a foundation for future theoretical and empirical studies.
Key words: metadiscourse, metadiscursivity, metadiscourse marker, metatext, written metadiscourse, spoken metadiscourse
