METALANGUAGE – METATEXT – METADISCOURSE: FROM TERM TO RESEARCH LANDSCAPE

In modern linguistics, there is an interest in studying the phenomenon of reflection. The relevance of the research is determined by a combination of cognitive-heuristic, empirical and terminological factors. The paper clarifies the meaning of the terms metalanguage, metatext, and meta-
discourse, establishes research and methodological contexts of their use, and identifies patterns between the use of the term and the empirical research base (linguistic material). As a result of the conducted research, it was found that the study of reflection in language and speech of metalanguage reflection has deep traditions. Their content is embodied in the meanings and contexts of the use of terms that denote the phenomena of the internal reference of the language. The terms “metalanguage”, “metatext”, “metatadiscourse” do not have fundamentally different denotative relatedness. On the contrary, the hypothesis” is confirmed that the choice and content features of these terms are dictated by the methodology of the research. Each of the terms corresponds to a specific research landscape: “metalanguage” – structuralist, “metatext” – anthropocentric, “metadiscourse” – cognitive-discursive.
