PROJECTIVE POETICS OF A. P. CHEKHOV: TRAITS OF THE CHARACTERS OF F. GRILPARZER'S PLAY “SAPPHOˮ IN CHEKHOV'S CHARACTERS

The category of “projection” and its implementation in Chekhov’s works are analyzed in the context of the connection with the tragedy of the Austrian writer F. Grillparzer “Sappho”. Chekhov's projective approach is manifested in the writer's correlation of his characters with others and the enrichment of their meaning through an additional circle of connections with literary predecessors. Chekhov’s tendency to project his characters onto other people’s characters is explained by the writer’s aesthetic principles and his artistic strategy of stylization. It is shown that projective poetics creates a metatheatrical effect: the characters play, in addition to their organic roles, additional roles, sometimes known to the characters, and sometimes only to the author.
