The paper analyses lexico-semantic compression as a translation strategy in diplomatic discourse. Two types of reduction - lexico-semantic and semantic-syntactic - are empirically verified both quantitatively and qualitatively. It is demonstrated that typological differences between languages and genre-specific requirements necessitate a balanced application of compression to preserve the communicative intent and official stance.
