M. Yu. Lermontov’s “The Cliff”: Motive of Loneliness in the Structure of the Text

Abstract

It is shown that in the poem a number of folklore and mythological (including universal) images and plots are significant – the world tree, the tale of the firebird, the myth of Cupid and Psyche. In all cases, the standard scheme is significantly deformed, so that the motive of loneliness and the impossibility of meeting dominate in contradiction with the original. Also it is identified the iconic elements of the internal structure of the text, embodying the main motives of the work.
