“MURDER AS A FINE ART” IN THE NOVEL BY PETER ACKROYD “HAWKSMOOR” (1985)
Abstract
Key words: Kunstlerroman, artist’s novel, Peter Ackroyd, Hawksmoor, theme of art, Thomas de Quincey.
This article proposes to introduce Ackroyd’s novel ‘Hawsksmoor’ (1985) as a postmodernist Kunstlerroman (artist’s novel). It highlights the theme of fine arts and its variations in different contexts of interpretation: particular artist’s vision; art and progress (system of characters); art and ethics (criminal plot). An attention is also paid to intertextual inclusions, especially to Thomas de Quincey’s article ‘On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts’ (1827).
