This article attempts to determine the pragmatic potential of the titles of the novels of contemporary English writer Julian Barnes. A title has a key position in the main body of the work of fiction. It does not only convey in a concentrated form the main theme or idea of the work, but also has a special pragmatic potential that causes a certain emotional reaction from the reader. That is why writers attach great importance to the proper choosing of titles of their works.
