COHESIVE FUNCTION OF PARENTHETICAL CONSTRUCTIONS IN INDIRECT SPEECH

Structurally parentheses break free indirect style. Pragmatically they establish the affective mutuality between the reader and the character, connecting their discourses. Describing the context in which the character is meditating, the parenthesis stimulates the reader to create meta-representations of the character’s thoughts implicitly expressed by the author. Our analysis has revealed that the peculiar pragmatic significance of parentheses in free indirect style is achieved by their double actualization - both as independent components of the character’s speech and as part with accentuated content within the character’s inner speech.
