Repetition of Emotive and Mental Verbs as One of the Means of Characters Characteristics in A.P. Chekhov’s Prose
Abstract
Galina F. Gavrilova (Rostov-on-Don, Russian Federation)
The article shows that repetition in A.P. Chekhov’s language of prose is its organic feature, affecting the entire structure of the text. A special role in this respect is played by the repetition of emotive and mental verbs. It makes Chekhov’s texts harmonious, creates its special meaningful saturation by depicting the inner life of the characters with visual-figurative means; unites separate fragments of the text in a single unforgettable whole, affecting the mind and feelings of the reader.
Lexical and semantic repetitions of verbs serve as an effective means of updating the contents of the texts of the works of A.P. Chekhov and deautomatization of their perception by the reader.
The nature of the repetition depends on the author. Contact repetition by Chekhov can be called conditional, because the repeated lexemes in his texts are necessarily separated by grammatical distributors of the first word. Characteristic for A.P. Chekhov is a distant grammatical repetition, which includes a repeating lexeme. Semantic repetitions are used by him, only composing a synonymous series.
Key words: emotivity, harmonization, mentality, expressiveness, grammatical repetition.
