The genres of English-speaking academic communication have a pragmatic orientation, which is directly dependent on its functions. It can be proved by means of a pragmastylistic analysis. The strategy of academic communication includes certain conditions for communication, the personality of communicants and the implementation of a communication plan. The article analyses the identification of communicative tactics in the genres of the admission and academic essays in modern English. In the genre of the admission essay “tactics of expression of desire and hope”, “tactics of comparison”, “tactics of self-remembering”, and some others have been distinguished. Among the communicative tactics in the texts of an academic essay we can mention “tactics of emotional impact”, “tactics of bringing examples”, etc. The basic setting of the genre of the admission essay is to try to persuade the admission committee to accept the entrant to university. In the academic essay, pragmatic attitudes are reflected in the student’s intention to demonstrate the horizons, ways of thinking, knowledge of the material, etc. The author comes to the conclusion that the units of the language are chosen by the producer of speech and depend on his intentions, conditions of communication and norms of using the language in the given genre.
