Abstract

Alexander E. Pavlenko, Galina V. Pavlenko (Taganrog, Russian Federation), Olga A. Stroganova (St. Petersburg, Russian Federation)

In addition to the existing classification of dictionaries, it is proposed to distinguish the non-classification type of lexicographic works – «cultural code keeper dictionary» – on the basis of the sociolinguistic characteristic identifying the role of dictionaries in the formation of identity of large and small groups. An example of such a work is «An Etymological Dictionary of the Norn Language in Shetland» by the Danish linguist J. Jacobsen.

Key words: the Shetland dialect, Norn, identity, sociolinguistic characteristic of a dictionary, «cultural code keeper dictionary».
