Abstract

The article focuses on major types of syntactic structures used to implement the impersonalization strategy in the Old Saxon text of ‘Heliand’. The importance of the study arises from little attention hitherto given to Old-Saxon written artifacts, as well as from the possibility to facilitate reconstruction of the overall picture of grammatical, semantic, and functional features of the impersonality category in old Germanic languages. It is established that Old-Saxon possessed a variety of impersonal structures that had regular equivalents in cognate languages.

Key words: Old Saxon, Old English, impersonality, indefinite-personal structures, semantic subject
