USAGE OF STYLISTIC DEVICES TO EXPRESS PRAGMATIC FUNCTION IN POLITICAL RHETORIC
Abstract
Key words: rhetoric, political rhetoric, stylistics, pragmatics, intentions of the speaker, political linguistics.
Political rhetoric in modern world becomes more important taking into account its main task to influence readers and listeners. Research of linguistic devices that make texts on political topics more expressive are of high relevance. From the point of view of style of modern English texts expressing political rhetoric, mainly related to publicistic style. This makes the presence of the main features of this style in political texts. These include: objectivity of the information, accuracy of the facts, some restraint in emotion, logical sequence of presentation, consistency and integrity of the text.
In publicistic style in general stylistic devices, in addition to its function of expression, also have pragmatic meaning. As it is known, linguistic pragmatics helps to answer the following questions: who, whom, what, why, in what situation. We believe that the stylistic devices used in the texts of political rhetoric help to solve this pragmatic meaning and are an effective means to perform the main function of exposure.
Material of the article are two articles from the media resource BBC News, covering the current events taking place in Ukraine and around it. This material is of particular interest as it allows to trace how linguistic stylistics assists pragmatic problems.
